James Roger Thomas has been doing farrier work for over 15 years. He originally trained at a 6-week farrier school put on by local farriers, Brother and Harry Moore. After graduating the school, he and two of his cousins went on to have their own farrier service. They served several local stables in the area. James has done everything from shoeing pulling draft horses to flat-shod saddlebreds and tennessee walking horses to shoeing hunter/jumper and eventer horses. His speciality, however, is QH's--those who are used for gaming and heavy farm work.

Kris has been trimming horses for about 8 years and shoeing for close to 3. She has not attended any farrier school, but she has done various amounts of training with several farriers and continues to pick James' brain about how to better shoe horses. She is always wanting to learn more about shoeing and has been known to make a nuisance of herself around other farriers by asking so many questions! Kris originally learned how to shoe for western pleasure and hunter/jumper horses. Her own horse, Tique, is almost always shod with eventing shoes.

Kris and James work as a team to shoe their client's horses. James normally does the front feet while Kris tackles the hind feet. James often coaches Kris while she trims and shoes just to keep her in tip-top-shape. Kris particularly enjoys cleaning the foot once it has been shod--rasping and clinching till it looks beautiful and perfect. If she is not tired out from doing lots of horses, she will often clean the front feet for James simply because she loves her work so much! As a team, Kris and James make sure to take plenty of time with each horse. They want the horse to be as comfortable as possible throughout the whole process. They are NOT advocates of hitting a mis-behaving horse with their tools unless it is as a last resort. They prefer to be kind and gentle, using a twitch if necessary to keep the horse calm. Often while James is shoeing in front, Kris is up at the horse's head working her calming magic on the horse. She has been known to literally put horses to sleep while James is working! Kris and James take their time to ensure the most pleasurable experience possible for both horse and owner.
