Molly just turned 5 years old this past
June. She is halter broke and I have
started her on the ground. She has
accepted the bit (no problem!) and is
learning to yield to pressure. I have
been ground driving her. She has
accepted the saddle and a rider - again,
no problem. She just has no clue what
you want her to do! She loads, clips,
stands for farrier/vet, stands tied
(although I have never had her in cross
ties), etc., etc. No vices. I've had her
about a year and she is used to being
out on pasture 99% of the time. She is
easy to catch (especially if you have a
molasses cookie with you!) She gets
along with the other horses she is
pastured with but she tends to be "the
leader." However, just because is the
leader of her pasture buddies, does not
mean she challenges her handler. Her
ground manners are very good. She is not
pushy at all. She is very easy to handle
with just the lightest touch. Although,
on rare occassions, she has gotten a
little bit stubborn when being led and
planted her feet for a few seconds.
Again, with a firm voice and light
encouragement, she comes along fine. I
think it may be that she wants to stop
and look at something rather than
refusing to be led. She was checked by
the vet about 2 weeks ago. Teeth did not
need to be done and I got a Coggins test
(negative, of course). UTD on worming.
Will probably be due for a trim in 2
weeks. She has never had shoes. Her feet
are good. Although you can't see it in
the pictures, her mane is very long and
thick!
One of the most special
things about this mare is that I'm only
the second owner. The original owner had
her since birth. She is like a totally
blank slate because she has never been
mistreated in any way or handled
roughly. In working with her I have
found her to be intelligent, gentle,
patient, responsive to praise and very
tolerant. When something does startle
her, she is not one to bolt and go crazy
- that may be the draft horse in her I
guess. She has a very kind eye and
trusts easily with patient and gentle
handling. Sometimes there is a bit of
"child-like" innocence about her which
is very endearing
She is
registered as a Premium North American
Spotted Draft. She is 1/2 shire and 1/2
spotted draft with some belgian in her
background as well. Stands 16+ hands
Would consider trade for a
haflinger that rides and drives
