Shasta is 14 years old and 16 hands
tall. She can carry a big rider. This
mare is NOT registered. She is sound
and has a current Coggins. A health
certificate will be provided if
requested.
She has a very nice
slow foxtrot and a nice canter. She
tends to get a little pacey at the in
between speeds, but she's been ridden on
a loose rein and not collected. I don't
know if she would come out of the pace
or not. It's not really been an issue
for me, so I haven't tried. She's a
great ride.
She has been trail
ridden a lot in southern Missouri and
this is what she excels at. She goes
over and through most everything,
including water. She is pretty patient
when tied. Loads beautifully in
straight-loads, stock trailers,
whatever, and rides quiet. Good around
traffic. Easy to catch in open pasture
(I don't stall my horses, although she
has been stalled and does very well).
Loves to be curried. Can be fly-sprayed.
Current on worming and shots, including
West Nile.
She neckreins and has
been ridden in a lot of different types
of gear including a hackamore and even a
halter. She takes a bit quite well. You
can basically use whatever you feel
comfortable with.
She leads
quite well although if she's excited she
sometimes tries to lead you. A couple of
snaps to the halter usually straightens
her out. When you mount, you may have to
ask her to stand still a couple of times
as she wants to move some. But I haven't
found it a big issue. I'm only 5'2" and
need for her to stand when mounting. I
have also ridden her bareback, slid off
her rump to get off, and crawled under
her. Not touchy anywhere on her body
including her ears. She is good with her
feet. Currently she is barefoot, but she
can be shod.
I have ridden her
bareback away from her buddies by
herself and other than a little
wandering around, she does fine. She's
also good with a group of horses. I've
had turkey fly up nearby and deer run
by. She startles, but she doesn't try to
jump out from under you (a good thing
when you're bareback!). She saddles
very well and is not cinchy. She lowers
her head nicely for the
bridle.
She's not the type of
horse that you have to ride every
day...or even every month. She's broke
and she's going to stay that way. This
mare is great for the experienced rider
who wants a solid mount or would be a
good extra horse for your visitors and
people who don't ride much. I would be
careful about putting very young riders
on her unless they were supervised. Not
because she's mean, but because she's so
big and strong that I feel she might
take advantage of them. She's smart and
quickly figures out whether or not the
rider knows what they are doing.
Typically, she just puts her head down
to eat. If a little kid is on her and
she puts her head down to eat, they may
end up going down with her. I think
she'd be great for the adult beginner or
intermediate rider who has an
experienced friend, parent, or spouse
helping them.
I want to reiterate
that this is a BIG horse! I've had some
interest in her, but some have been
intimidated by her size. Several have
said, "Wow, she's big!" even though I've
told them that she's big before they see
her. Well, I'm telling you right now
that she is a true 16 hands tall. I just
want to save you a trip if you aren't
interested in a big mare.
